Kris Chau

This postcard caught my eye at the Piazza flea market last Saturday. I love this illustration by Kris Chau. Check out her website. She has a quirky, romantic style and excellent handwriting!

I love this new mailer delivered by designer Kelly Dorsey at 160over90. Amazing attention to detail. Be sure to check out more views on their blog.

I recently finished a project involving a photoshoot with one sexy blackboard. You can see one of the process photos below — the project was a great success and learning experience. I saved some of the shots of the blackboard alone, and a few of the chalk drawings, free to use! You can download the free images here. Below are some samples. These images are in their raw format and ready for some photoshop skillz. Enjoy.

These images are free to use. Click to download.
Here is a photo of the blackboard we shot. We used the illustrations separately as headers for a series of flyers. Chris Mortlock, of GDLoft, was a huge help.

striking package design

Recently returning from New Orleans, my mother returned with some special treats: Aunt Sally's Pralines! I don't like Pralines but love the packaging. Attention to detail creates a period piece reminiscent of an old candy shop and a crisp, enticing package. Now to figure out who designed them....

New Card Designs

T-Mobile cardT-Mobile card

Above you'll see three new plastic designs for a T-Mobile promotion. The client was looking for exciting cards to be handed out as freebies during Tradeshows. The bottom two are animated to show the effect of using "layered art," which involves printing on both sides of clear plastic, probably acrylic. This requires at least four (4) passes through a press. Starbucks, Apple and Target use layered plastics when creating their giftcards.

Whatever Wednesday

Illustrator Maira Kalman spoke at the ICA in Philadelphia last night. She is quite charming; I see why she has an immense following (mostly of blue-haired, female hebrews). I must be honest — I don't really follow her work and have not yet read this book, but a designer I respect gifted it to me and well, I felt I owed it to him to attend this event and exhibition. I'm glad I did. I learned multiple things tonite: I really must read Kalman's illustrated version of the Elements of Style, the Director of ICA Philadelphia, Claudia Gould, is obnoxious and absurdly dressed, and there are many, many jewish people of all hair colors in this world. There was also a cake for Abraham Lincoln's birthday and I now have Maira Kalman's signature to add to my collection of signed books (which includes 2 items, Maira Kalman and Chip Kidd — hey you gotta start somewhere).
