Whatever Wednesday

Illustrator Maira Kalman spoke at the ICA in Philadelphia last night. She is quite charming; I see why she has an immense following (mostly of blue-haired, female hebrews). I must be honest — I don't really follow her work and have not yet read this book, but a designer I respect gifted it to me and well, I felt I owed it to him to attend this event and exhibition. I'm glad I did. I learned multiple things tonite: I really must read Kalman's illustrated version of the Elements of Style, the Director of ICA Philadelphia, Claudia Gould, is obnoxious and absurdly dressed, and there are many, many jewish people of all hair colors in this world. There was also a cake for Abraham Lincoln's birthday and I now have Maira Kalman's signature to add to my collection of signed books (which includes 2 items, Maira Kalman and Chip Kidd — hey you gotta start somewhere).
